The incident took place shortly after 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 7, when Ronkonkoma Fire Department Lt. Michael White was driving south on Hudson Avenue in Lake Grove shortly after 7 p.m. when he saw a vehicle on fire at the intersection of Schoolhouse Road and Cedar Grove Avenue, the fire department said.

After calling in the fire, White quickly headed for the vehicle and found a person hanging out of the driver's side window in the burning vehicle.

"Without hesitation or concern for his own safety, Lieutenant White quickly sprung into action and pulled the driver from the burning vehicle, removing him to safety," the department said.

The driver was then rushed to a nearby hospital for injuries but is expected to recover.
